[edit]Should'nt Juice Leskinen be added to the list of famous people? Finns from that area to comment? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.143.48.129 (talk) 12:59, 27 September 2016 (UTC)
I'm confused. I don't see Savonia on the map. -- Zoe — Preceding undated comment added 05:29, 21 March 2003 (UTC)
- See "Savolaks" in the middle of the map. --mav — Preceding undated comment added 05:32, 21 March 2003 (UTC)
- It would be nice if that were pointed out in the article. -- Zoe — Preceding undated comment added 05:35, 21 March 2003 (UTC)
- Done. --mav — Preceding undated comment added 05:39, 21 March 2003 (UTC)
- In Swedish, which also was the language of government, the name is Savolaks (sometimes spelled Savolax) and this is what is seen on the map. Among the Finnish speaking population the name was Savo and these two names can befound on top of the table and at the begining of the entry. The name of the entry, Savonia, is the Latin version of the name, which is also used for English. / Mic — Preceding undated comment added 07:59, 21 March 2003 (UTC)

- Savonia (historical province) → Savo (historical province)
- Savonian dialects → Savo dialects
- Northern Savonia (parliamentary electoral district) → North Savo (parliamentary electoral district)
- Southern Savonia (parliamentary electoral district) → South Savo (parliamentary electoral district)
- Upper Savonia → Upper Savo
- Savonia railway → Savo railway
- Inner Savonia → Inner Savo
- North Eastern Savonia → Northeast Savo
– WP:COMMONNAME. Simple Savo is more common than the Latinate Savonia. "Savo" cannot be searched by itself due to eponyms, but see the Ngrams for the phrases "Savo(nia) and Karelia", where the Latinate form does not even register. See also Ngram for "Savo(nian) dialects", where again the long form does not register. Savo is also used in the Cambridge History of Scandinavia, Cambridge concise history of Sweden and all the English-language histories of Finland available in archive.org: [1][2][3][4][5], except for Meinander[6], who uses Swedish Savolax. For "Savo dialects", one reliable source is the Oxford guidebook to Uralic languages. The Institute for the Languages of Finland also recommends the name Savo for the historical province in English (See Toponymic guidelines: Finland, p.27). The sub-regional units like Inner Savo do not seem to have an official English name, but the suggestions here follow from WP: CONSISTENT and WP:CONCISE (cf. North Savo). 84.251.164.143 (talk) 20:00, 17 March 2025 (UTC)
- Further evidence: "Savo railway" is a term in common use[7], while "Savonia railway" is not (no results for the exact phrase: [8]). 84.251.164.143 (talk) 07:41, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
